WEEK #2: Lulu from England is the helper for the women and who cares who is helping the men? The men with few exceptions, did very well this evening so their helper did O.K.
The theme had something to do with songs recorded by British recording artists from the 1960's....my era.
I have a fond remembrance of Lulu:
In America in the 1960's, when a man finished high school, if he didn't go to college, he got drafted into the Army. (Women were exempt). He did not pass GO, he did not collect $200...Puff...right into the Army. Once he graduated college, PUFF...then he got drafted right into the Army. Hence, graduate school was a very popular preference after college. The strategy was to stay in school as long as possible. As long as you were in school, you were not in the Army. Of course, if you had connections or got lucky, you could get into a military reserve unit and not have to continue in school. George Bush and John Kerry got into reserve units. Kerry got called to active duty out of the reserves.
By the way, there was a very unpopular war going on in the 1960's, at it's peak in the late 1960's, called the Vietnam War.
I quit college in 1966 and was drafted soon thereafter and after basic training ended up in Ft. Lee, Virginia (Petersburg, Va) and on my first night out since I had gone in the Army (over 3 months) I went to a movie. The movie I went to see was called "To Sir With Love" with Sidney Poitier, but the highlight of the movie was the title song at the end sung by a young British girl name Lulu.
Less than a year later, I was in Pleiku, South Vietnam and John Kerry was whining and complaining in Cam Rahn Bay and Vung Tau...two Rest and Recreation (R&R) areas for the troops. I spent a week in Vung Tau and wore civilian clothes for the entire week. I received my honorable discharge in June of 1970. Kerry received his thirty years later from President Clinton.

#1...Haley Scarnato...She looked sexy and sung her best by far in the competition, but as usual Simon summed it up best "You naughty little thing." He closed by reminding everyone that people would remember her tonight for "more than your singing." Haley looked like she was auditioning for a Playboy photo layout.
She'll get it. She should be safe.
#2...Chris Richardson...He also sung very well and Simon told him that this was "his best performance so far."
#3...Stephanie Edwards...Simon was "not crazy about it" but clearly she has the talent. She is only 19 years old, but the song was too boring for her and she does not seem to be having the fun she should be having. As usual Dial Idol has her dead last at 12:30 A.M. and she may finish last according to their busy signals, but there were clearly three other terrible singers tonight.
#4...Blake Lewis...I thought he was the best of the men this evening and at the time that he sung Simon agreed "strongest performance so far." None of the men did any better than him. I like him and I love his personality and style. He can't compete with the girls, but if he sticks around awhile, he can get a career out of this.
#5...Lakeesha Jones...She sung "Diamonds are Forever" from the James Bond film and they put $1,000,000 worth of diamonds on her. She did well, but she keeps singing the same type of tunes. Hopefully, she can sing something else and show some versatility. Dial Idol has her in 4th place tonight at this time, but there are 6 hours to go. She's safe.
#6. Phil Stacey...He sung "Tobacco Road" and I hated it, but I really am scared by his look and reptile like appearance. Only Sanjaya keeps him safe. Dial Idol has him in third place as of 12:30 A.M. which is sick...I say he is bottom 3 for sure.
#7...Jordin Sparks...Awesome and almost perfect. Great smile and great voice with a wonderful personality to go with it.
#8...Sanjaya...Bad, What did I expect? There was a young girl in the audience who was crying. Everyone suspected that she was crying because of Sanjaya. I think she was crying because her ears hurt. The camera was on her all during his singing performance. Simon delivered the line of the night concerning Sanjaya's results: "The little girls face says it all." Amen!
As the evening wore on, the little girl was shown after almost every other singer and she was crying for each of them too. On second thought, she may have been crying because her ears were still hurting because of Sanjaya late into the program. Bad news for Sanjaya. He needs to go and hopefully tonight will be his last night. Helping him along will be Randy and Paula's praises of his effort this evening. No one ever agrees with those two baffoons. (By the way, did you see Sanjaya's sister in the audience?...I think she got a boob job since the auditions)
#9...Gina Glocksen...She sung "Paint it Black" and her singing was awful. Her look was good and her attitude was good, but this is still a singing competition and Simon reminded her of it. I think she will crack the bottom 3 Wednesday evening, but clearly Sanjaya or Phil should be leaving and not Gina, but Gina was pretty bad and could be bottom 2.
#10...Chris Sligh...He sung O.K. and showed a bit of personality. He is still in the bottom 5 of those who are left after Sanjaya, Phil, or Gina are eliminated tomorrow. In other words, he will be leaving us soon. His songs don't change and his voice is not showing any improvement. Blake and Chris have definitely stepped it up and the Fab 4 are still the Fab 4. Haley has attributes that Chris cannot match. After Sanjaya, Phil and Gina are gone...Beware!
#11...Melinda Doolittle...As usual, the nice girl knocked it out of the park again. My main worry for Melinda is that she has no neck. This is very troubling to me.
My girlfriend (retired beauty college owner) says that Melinda needs to have her hair cut shorter.
This will make her look like she has a neck? Something needs to be done...We cannot have an American Idol with no neck...it is unamerican! I got an email from the Giraffe at the Columbia, S.C. Zoo and she was upset also.
Bottom three...Gina Glocksen (rocker), Phil Stacey (reptile), Sanjaya Malakar (not a singer)....Gone...Sanjaya!
